Under Donald Trump, the United States and Russia voted against UN General Assembly resolutions to condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine, a stunning shift in U.S. policy over the years.
The vote on Ukraine and European-supported resolutions put the United States against its long-standing European allies, in line with Russia, an invader in the third anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the Trump administration held discussions with Moscow.
The resolution was voted by the General Assembly by 93 votes. It noted: “Worrying that the Russian Federation’s full invasion of Ukraine has lasted for three years and has had devastating and lasting consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for other regional and global stability” and “calling for degradation, early cessation of hostilities and A peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine.”
The United States has proposed a rival general resolution that does not call Russia an invader or recognizes Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
It “pleads for the rapid end of the conflict and further urges a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.” It mourns the tragic death of the conflict across Russia-Ukraine and reiterates “the main purpose of the United Nations expressed in the Charter of the United Nations It is to maintain international peace and security and resolve disputes peacefully.”
The United States is expected to propose the same draft resolution at the UN Security Council later on Monday.
Before the congress vote, the United States sent D’Affaire Ambassador Dorothy Shea, who was tasked by the United Nations, urged “all member states, including Ukraine and Russia” to support the resolution.
“A simple, historic statement of the conference, not looking back. A resolution aimed at a simple idea: ending the war, she said.
“Sir. President, that’s why the United States opposes the proposal of another resolution. That’s why we cannot support Ukraine’s resolution and we urge it to withdraw, in favor of a strong statement committed to us ending the war and towards a lasting Peaceful efforts,” Shea said.
After several amendments to Russia’s language, the United States finally voted on its own resolutions at the conference and reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
