S3xual assault on a 10-year-old epilepsy girl in Lagos was sentenced to 14 years in prison

The Ikega Sexual Crime and Domestic Violence Court was sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempting to assault a 10-year-old girl with epilepsy.

After Shina pleaded guilty, Judge Rahman Oshodi sentenced the sentence, under a plea deal agreement, against a revised charge of attempted sexual assault.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reported that Shina initially pleaded not guilty to it, but later changed his guilty plea as part of the agreement.

Judge Ossady made a judgment that the evidence before the court and the defendant’s voluntary confession proved his culprit.

“I must emphasize that the original charges have the highest sentence for life imprisonment,” the judge said.

“You betray your trust as a traditional therapist by leveraging a vulnerable child who seeks to cure epilepsy.

“I have considered your plea for leniency, your attorney and prosecutor’s proposal. I hereby sentence you to 14 years in jail.

Ossodi ruled that the verdict would take effect on November 16, 2018 (the day Shina was arrested).

He further ordered the criminal’s family to ensure recovery upon release.

“You must not have direct or indirect contact with the family of the survivor and by law, your name should be registered as an S3X offender,” Oshodi added.

Shina was initially filed by the Lagos State Government on April 4, 2021.

He pleaded not guilty, prompting a prosecution led by state counsel Ms. Bukola Okeowo, who called two witnesses: the survivor’s mother and an investigative policeman.

The prosecution presented compelling evidence, including exhibitions.

The survivor’s mother testified that she brought her daughter to Shina for treatment due to epilepsy, not knowing that he would exploit her.

According to the prosecution, Article 262 of the 2015 Lagos State Criminal Code violated the offence.
