According to the Pioneer, former military head, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babajda (IBB), has reportedly avoided any responsibility for the Igbo tribe in the 1966 military coup. This statement comes nearly sixty years after the coup.
The 1966 coup led to a civilian government led by Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa. Several major political and military figures were killed in the process, including Balewa himself, Prime Minister Ahmadu Bello, Prime Minister Ladoke Akintola of the West and numerous senior military officers in the North.
