A former Denver Broncos special team player has reached a settlement with the NFL after he suffered a knee injury at the end of the season in a 2022 game.
Aaron Patrick tore his ACL in overtime against LA Chargers at Sofi Stadium in the Broncos’ “Monday Night Football” game. He was injured when he stepped on a mat on the grass to cover the ropes and cables of the Alliance Live Replay Monitor. Patrick claimed that in order to avoid a collision with NFL officials located on the sidelines, his feet grabbed the mat, causing his knee to bend in embarrassment.
The 28-year-old filed a lawsuit, blaming the NFL, La Chargers, ESPN and MAT. He argued that harm could have been prevented. Patrick sued unspecified damages, including loss bonuses and future earning potential.
Earlier this week, although the terms of the deal were unclear, a conditional settlement was reached with all parties designated in the lawsuit. Patrick’s attorney William M. Berman said his clients are happy to move forward and focus on his career. The Broncos gave up Patrick in August 2023 and he has not been signed by another team since.
