Nigerians (NIDCOM) Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa revealed that over the past five years, diaspora Nigerians have remitted about $90 billion in diaspora to increase national development of the economy.
She collaborated with Nigerians (NIDCOM) in Abuja at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) workshop on the theme: “Six Commission Surveys conducted by Nigerian Professionals among Expatriates: Policy Measures to Contribute to Nationality Development.”
The NIDCOM boss delivered a speech through Gabriel Odu, an official of the Media, Public Relations and Agreement Unit, stressing the need for accurate and adequate data to gain a deeper understanding of the contributions, challenges and opportunities of the professional community in the Diaspora Nigeria.
Dabiri-EREWA notes that the topic of the stakeholder workshop on diaspora research is highly relevant as it will help map key skills, identify emerging talents and build effective ways to engage them.
She said:By leveraging derived data, NIDCOM can implement targeted policies to promote interactions among diaspora, promote stronger ties with Nigeria, and maximize its valuable contribution to national development. ”
She also praised Professor Antonia Taiye Simbine, Director General of the Institute of Social and Economics (NISER), for taking the initiative and expressed optimism about further cooperation between the two institutions.
Professor Antonia Simbine told participants that the study was designed to go beyond remittances and ensure the development of the all-round diaspora Nigeria.
She noted that there are more than 17 million Nigerians among the diaspora, and the insights from this study will provide the basis for leveraging diaspora expertise and investing in strategic policies for national growth.
Director General Niser expressed her gratitude to the NIDCOM boss for her support for the event and her efforts to grow and develop the diaspora.
