    • According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 20,197 Nigerians stranded in various countries voluntarily returned to their homes.
    • Most returnees believe that economic instability is their primary motivation for immigration, and 94% seek better economic opportunities.
    • Many returnees also reported facing exploitation, including forced labour and sexual exploitation.

According to data on various repatriation exercises promoted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), no less than 20,197 Nigerians stranded in various countries have returned to their homes voluntarily.

Standed Nigerians return to their country under the IOM’s auxiliary voluntary return and reintegration program, which involves interventions in various Nigerian missions abroad.

Women and girls account for nearly 88% of returnees, while men account for 13%.

Most returnees belong to the age group of 18 to 39 years old, with the age group of 18 to 25 years old being particularly vulnerable to traffickers.

According to IOM, “the stranded Nigerian immigrants return home from irregular migration routes in the Mediterranean along the transport and destination countries.”
