South Africa’s hawks are investigating four treason cases related to false information about the land acquisition bill. The cases were opened by political parties, although Hawks Head, General Godfrey Lebeya refused to disclose the specific individual or organization under censorship.
“These cases involve people who may have crossed the border to convey something, and have fallen into a high treason. I don’t want to mention the name of the organization,” Lebia said.
The investigation is still in its early stages, but a growing number of people are calling for African lobbying group Afriforum to be charged with treason.
Last month, the MKK party expressed disapproval of South Africa’s land acquisition policy and its genocide case against Israel in an executive order signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The United States later said it planned to develop a strategy for the status of refugee people in South Africa.
Afriforum representatives are currently meeting with Trump’s team in Washington, a move that has exacerbated tensions between the United States and South Africa. Since then, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged Afriforum and Unity to focus on resolving issues within South Africa, rather than appealing abroad.
On Monday, March 3, Lebeya confirmed that the Eagles are working closely with the National Prosecution Agency (NPA) that will determine if there is enough evidence to prosecute.
“These types of crimes require careful evidence collection. When time comes, the NPA will decide whether the things we collect are enough to bring individuals to court,” he said.
Lebeya added that the Eagles would not be arrested without proper legal support. “We will not discriminate – anyone who commits a crime must know that we will act without fear, preference or prejudice,” he said.
