    Tinubu Govt unveils new guidelines for organ transplants

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government unveils new standards and guidelines for establishing and coordinating organ and tissue transplant services across the country.

    During the official launch in Abuja on Thursday, the Health Minister Iziaq Salastressing its importance is a key step in improving Nigeria’s organ donation practices.

    Salako stressed that the initiative represents a life-saving opportunity, which provides a second opportunity for individuals facing an end-stage organ failure.

    As noted in a statement by the Ministry’s spokesperson Daughter BalogunSalako describes the guide as the result of a comprehensive collaboration between healthcare professionals, legal experts, professional organizations, media entities and other essential stakeholders.

    The minister said “Today, we are here to unveil a comprehensive framework that will regulate organ and tissue transplant services in our country. The initiative demonstrates our commitment to saving lives through ethical practices and strong supervision mechanisms.

    “This document is particularly important given Nigeria’s unique challenges. Recently, we have witnessed unethical organ harvesting and other overdoses in visceral transplant workspaces.

    “These cases underscore the urgent need for strict regulations to protect organ donors and recipients.transparent

    Salako, represented by the Director of Hospital Services Salahudeen Jimoh, It is emphasized that each aspect has been carefully examined during the verification process to ensure that it effectively addresses the specific challenges faced by Nigeria.

    The document highlights several key areas, including the ethics of transplantation, donor protection, safety of transplant patients, minimum standards for organ transplantation, and procedures required to ensure compliance.

    As Salako pointed out, these guidelines aim to restore confidence in organ donation in Nigeria by promoting transparency, accountability and compliance with international best practices.

    To further strengthen regulations, the Minister stressed the need to map and certify all medical institutions involved in organ donation and transplantation to ensure that they comply with the highest standards of practice.

    “In addition, we will establish an organ donation and transplant registry and banking system to simplify the management of organ donation throughout NigeriaHe said.
