Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed deep sorrow over the death of former presidential spokesman and leading politician Doyin Okupe.
Okupe, who previously served as OBI presidential director-general, worked at a hospital in Lagos after his cancer remission. He is 72 years old.
Okupe is a longtime political strategist who serves as a senior special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan. In 2024, he resigned from the record on the grounds of ideological differences, and later faced criticism for recognizing President Bora Tinubu’s economic policies.
Obi described Okupe as a passionate advocate for Nigeria when reacting to the news on Friday.
“This morning, I received shocking news of the death of my dear brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe, with great sorrow,” Obi wrote on his X-handle. “His death is a huge loss – not only to his family and loved ones, but to all of us. Therefore, I would like to urge members of the contradictory movement and other groups to pray for the eternal rest of the soul of Dr. Okupe and remember his family during these difficult times.”
Obi prays for Okupe’s eternal rest and expresses his condolences to his family, urging them to find strength during this difficult time.
