A supporter of the poor? Tinubu mourns Pope Francis

President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, saying the late pope was the unremitting efforts of the poor and provided guidance to millions of poor people around the world.

In a statement signed and issued in person on Easter Monday, April 21, Tinob praised Pope Francis for his firm commitment to serving God and mankind. The Pope died at the age of 88.

“Today, with a heavy heart, I mourn the death of Pope Francis with the faithful and Christians of the Catholic Church – the death of Pope Francis, a humble servant of God, the unremitting efforts of the poor, and provide guidance to millions,” wrote Tinob. “After celebrating the resurrection of Christ, his death is a divine return to his maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians.”

Tinubu reflects on the transformational influence of Pope Francis in 2013 and its global stage.

“From the beginning, he conveyed a message of mercy – we want us to see the face of Christ among marginalized, refugees, immigrants and forgotten people. He challenged powerful actions, called for action with justice, called for all our nations to welcome strangers, and reminded us of all this earth – our ordinary gift, our holy gift, and we must protect future generations.”

He described the late Pope as a “tool of peace”, and he deeply embodies the message of Christ: love for God and love for mankind.

“In a time of global division, he built a bridge between the rich and the poor. He is a staunch advocate of developing countries, constantly speaking out against economic injustice and praying for peace in troubled areas.”

Tinubu also praised Pope Francis’ spiritual leadership, saying his encyclopedia and herders’ letters “not only doctrinal and groundbreaking, but also timely and relevant”, providing clarity and hope in an increasingly complex world.

He recalls that in his Easter 2025 message he joined Christians, Thanksgiving health and was delighted to see him appear in the traditional Easter Sunday wishes at St. Peter’s Basilica.

“Las, the Lord called him home one day later, the world lost the most passionate voice for justice and climate action,” said Tinob. “May the good Lord whom he has given all his might bring him into the arms of eternity.”

Tinubu called on the Pope’s legacy to be respected, “Let us mourn him not only in words, but also elevate those who are oppressed, heal our communities and defend the dignity of everyone.”

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Nigeria, I express my condolences to the Catholic Church, the Catholic community around the world and Christian believers.”
