Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni won a seventh term on Saturday, January 17, after an election marred by violence and internet shutdowns, with arrests and abductions that Africa Observer said had “instilled fear”.
The electoral commission said 81-year-old Museveni won 71.65% of the vote in Thursday’s election, which saw reports of at least 10 deaths and intimidation of the opposition and civil society.
His victory allowed him to extend his 40-year rule over the East African country.
Museveni defeated 43-year-old singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine, who won 24.72% of the vote. Museveni said he went into hiding after security forces raided his home on Saturday.
