Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a formal petition to Police Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, calling for investigation and prosecution of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to carry out what he described as “crime and inflammatory and inflammatory” charges.
The petition dates April 3 and also attacked voters from her own attorney general and attorney general, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) centered on the claims made by Senator Akputi-Udoahan in a public speech in Kogi State on April 1.
Akpabio strongly refuted the allegations and said in his petition:
“This statement is not only an outrageous lie, but an attempt to recklessly and intentionally damage my reputation, endanger my life and safety, and incite political unrest.”
He further described these claims as political motives, without evidence, branding them as the purpose of blackmail and assassination character.
Akpabio called for immediate action, urging law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter under relevant laws and prosecuted Senator Akpoti-uduaghan, including criminal defamation, incitement, false allegations and conduct that could cause public peace.
He highlighted the far-reaching impact of the allegations on the widespread coverage of the allegations on television, radio, newspapers and social media platforms.
“The seriousness of this false allegation and the fact that it gains public attention make it necessary for law enforcement agencies to treat it with due urgency,” he said.
Akpabio highlighted the importance of holding public officials accountable for statements that can undermine the state’s peace and democratic institutions, summarizing his petition.
The development comes after a dispute between the two senators, during which Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan accused the Senate president of sexual harassment, an allegation that prompted her to be suspended for alleged misconduct.
