Senate President Godswill Akpabio firmly dismissed the rumor, claiming he promoted a $15,000 bribe to senators in exchange for their support for the Rivers State emergency.
He described the allegations as part of a baseless hate campaign against him.
The rumors have attracted attention on social media, saying Akpabio has promoted spending on bribery during a fast-breaking event at his Maitama Residence, where senators are present.
Naija News The Senate president was accused of allocating $5,000 on Tuesday and $10,000 on Wednesday, on the eve of a vote on a declaration of a state of emergency.
However, Akpabio spoke through his special media consultant Object Eyibohstrongly denies these claims, saying they are false and part of a malicious campaign designed to undermine his reputation.
“I know, indeed, he’s been breaking his fast since Senator Godswill Akpabio became Senate president. He did last year, he did this year, so why is it now a rumor?” Eyiboh said.
Eyiboh further questioned the logic behind the bribery allegations and asked Akpabio why he provided money to his colleagues.
“Why is he giving money about the dollar? I know the destruction of fasting, but I can tell you I don’t know whether it’s given $5,000 or $10,000, that’s not true. Eyiboh asserts.
He also noted that Akpabio’s rapid destruction of tradition was nothing new, noting that it happened without similar allegations. “He’s been doing it. He did it last year, so why is it related to money?” Eyiboh questioned.
On Thursday, the Senate and House voted in unanimous voices to pass the River State emergency.
The action was taken by President Bola Tinubu, who argued that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his agent and all members of the state capitol were suspended for six months due to the need to restore order amid growing political turmoil.
