Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi’s deputy chief whip faces the prospect of a lawsuit after allegedly defamatory comments to Senator Emmanuel Uduaghan and his wife, Senator Natasha Akpoti-uduaghan.
The couple’s legal representative made formal demands for public apology, warning that legal proceedings would be taken if the senator fails to comply.
In a letter dated March 27, 2025, Uduaghan, senior chief of Warri Kingdom, and attorneys representing Kogi Central Senate District accused Nwaebonyi of making destructive statements on television.
These words are aired on News CCTV and its membership platforms, including DSTV, GOTV, Startimes and Avo.
In the interview, Nwaebonyi allegedly made derogatory remarks, suggesting that Senator Akpoti-uduaghan has a pattern of false allegations of sexual harassment.
He also implies that her marriage to Chief Uduhan was based on coercion rather than mutual affection.
The couple’s legal representative condemned Nwaebonyi’s comments as intentional damage to the client’s reputation.
The statements quickly spread to social media and were described as efforts to undermine the public image of both people.
Lawyers argue that Nwoboni’s remarks mistakenly portray Chief Uduahan as the victim of blackmail and Senator Akputi-Udoagen is a man of a questionable moral character.
The letter notes that these false allegations have caused serious reputational damage, leading to distrust and embarrassment between their political, social and business partners.
The law firm’s letter requested a public apology to Senator Nwaebonyi within 14 days and will be broadcast on News CCTV and widely shared on social media platforms.
Attorneys warned that failure to comply with the request would lead to legal proceedings seeking remedies against Nwaebonyi.
