Angel Postecoglu’s reaction to being fired by Tottenham

Ange Postecoglu issued a statement after formally confirming that he was fired as Tottenham Hotspur head coach.

Tottenham Hotspur has officially split up with Ange Postecoglou two weeks after he coached the club to win its first major trophy in 17 years, the final victory in the 1-0 Europa League defeating Manchester United at Bilbaño.

Despite offering European silverware and Champions League qualification, the decision is amid ongoing concerns over the Spurs’ domestic performance, including a disappointing 17th place in the Premier League.

The Australian manager was appointed in June 2023 and was impressed with his offensive style, transparent communication and immediate focus on squad development. However, a serious decline in league form, with a victory finally covering up the club’s mainland success in the last 12 games.

In response to this decision, Postecoglou issued a dignified and emotional farewell statement reflecting on his two-year journey in North London, writing:My overwhelming emotions are one of my pride when I reflect on my role as Tottenham Hotspur manager. Have the opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves for a lifetime. Share this experience with everyone who truly loves this club and sees the impact it has on them, which I will never forget.

“The night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and a firm belief in dreams. It is impossible to overcome many challenges and a lot of noise to try to accomplish what many people say. We also laid the foundation for this club, which means this club doesn’t have to wait for another seven years to succeed.”

“I have a lot of confidence in this group of players and know that they have potential and growth more. I sincerely thank those who are the fate of the club, supporters. I know there are some difficult times, but I always feel like they want me to succeed, which gives me all the motivation to push.”

“It is important to admit that the hard-working people of the Spurs have encouraged me every day. Finally, I want to thank those who have been with me every day for the past two years. A great group of young people who are now legends of this football club and great coaches who have never doubted that they once suspected that we could do something special. We are always connected to each other.

The club expressed its gratitude in its official announcement, thanking Postecoglou for its leadership and achievements, especially ending the club’s long-term trophy drought.

However, the statement also mentioned the need for “more consistent alliance performance” and “a more obvious trajectory of domestic competitiveness.” Tottenham Hotspur is now starting to look for a successor.

Despite his sudden end in north London, Ange Postecoglou left as a manager who returned European glory to Tottenham Hotspur and, perhaps more importantly, reminded its supporters.
