Anger when Benue students stand in the rain saying hello to President Tinob

When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Benue State, middle school students welcomed him in the rain while singing the national anthem while singing along the roadside. The students were still in formation despite the downpour and splash through the vehicles, and the scene triggered a wave of online reactions.

The president’s visit was a series of violent attacks in parts of Benue, which brought mourning to many communities. Tinubu observed a moment of silence at a public event on Monday earlier, expressing condolences to the families of the deceased.

“I have sympathy for the people of Benue. I have spoken with the governor and I urge the leaders of the state to embrace peace and unity. We are a large family living under a roof, even in separate rooms,” said Tinob.

Tinubu, who fulfilled her commitment to visit the affected communities in person, arrived in Benue on Wednesday. However, seeing school children in the rain as part of the welcome agreement has attracted criticism.

The incident, after being posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), sent virality on X (formerly Twitter), raised questions about the welfare of children during official visits and whether more thoughtful etiquette practices should be adopted, especially when it comes to sad and inclement weather conditions.

    Respond to the post…

@trhymesz: “One day, Nigerians will wake up to know their rights and bring their country back from these tyrants. Until then, they will only continue to be treated by ruthless leaders.”

@jaysings001: “They are even standing on the road! But do I think today is a public holiday?”

@j94626377: “If my kids are there, I will make sure I will change them to another school immediately.”

@Mesigo422: “He will pass, not even look at them.

@tonirhymze: “Many of these kids will go home and be sick, but death is not new to the state.”

@nasoricha_: “Leadership should be about empathy and timing. After such a tragedy in Benue, it was wrong to ask children to stand in the rain to send out the wrong message. We need leaders who show compassion, not just present.”
