Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, demanded that women in politics show respect for men.
On Wednesday, April 23, the Senate Deputy Chief Whip spoke at a mandatory event held at the Abakaliki Local Government Headquarters, criticizing women who allegedly expressed disrespect for men.
Although he did not mention any name, Nwebonyi warned that such behavior sent a bad signal to the future of women in Nigerian politics.
“I am one of the people who advocate politically liberation of women. But that doesn’t mean that men’s rights and dignity should be undermined,” he said.
“In any case, women should condemn men. Telling a man in the Senate or anywhere else is unacceptable. We must support and respect our mothers, but should respect our mothers, but should show us the path to control strength and politics.”
It is worth recalling that Nwebonyi had a verbal exchange with former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili during a petition hearing with Senator Natasha Akpoti-uduagi Kogi Center at the hearing, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio Akpabio for sexual harassment.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central also filed a defamation lawsuit against Nwebonyi, seeking compensation of 5 billion guilds.
The lawsuit comes after Nwebonyi made several inflammatory and destructive remarks about Akpoti-Uduaghan in an interview with the channel TV show Sunrise Daily Program on March 6, 2025.
In the interview, Nwebonyi called her “excavator”, “the usual liar” and “the usual blackmailer”, accusing Akpoti-uduaghan of deeming it totally false, malicious and defamatory.
