The founder of Kingsway International Christian Center (KICC), Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, has become the focus of an ongoing church controversy after he decided to officiate at the wedding of Pastor Chris Okafor and his wife, Pearl.
The wedding, which took place while the charges were pending, continues to spark controversy after actress Doris Ogala publicly accused Pastor Okafor of cheating. O’Gara claims she has been in a relationship with the cleric since 2017 and was told she was getting married, but was shocked when news of his marriage appeared online.
Despite her claims and threats to reveal more details about their alleged relationship, the wedding went ahead as planned, with Pastor Ashmolovo officiating.
The situation has since drawn criticism from another Christian leader, Dr. Charles Aboki, who has publicly expressed his disappointment at Pastor Ashmolowo’s involvement. In a video shared on his Facebook page, Aboki questioned the moral judgment behind officiating the wedding, while serious allegations remain unresolved.
“I’m ashamed of you. Any society without rules will collapse.” Apochi said.
He stressed that religious leaders must be careful about the message their actions send to believers, especially when it comes to issues of ethics and integrity.
Dr. Aboki further accused Pastor Okafor of misconduct, claiming that he abandoned his wife and children while having an immoral relationship with actress Doris O’Gara. He also pointed to viral videos on social media of Okafor allegedly performing miracles, which he said undermined the credibility of Christianity.
According to Apokhi, publicly engaging with individuals facing serious accusations could be interpreted as an endorsement of their actions and could undermine the church’s moral authority.
To emphasize his position, he cited biblical figures such as Achan, Ananias, and Sapphira, who faced consequences for their moral misconduct, emphasizing that accountability is a fundamental principle of Christianity. He also drew comparisons to traditional African values, noting that communities have historically distanced themselves from those accused of misconduct.
“You don’t greet him. You don’t light a fire from his kitchen. You don’t trade with him. Because when you do, you seem to approve of his behavior,” he said.
So far, neither Pastor Ashmolowo nor Pastor Okafor has responded publicly to Dr. Aboki’s remarks, as public interest in the unfolding controversy continues to grow.
