The ARES scholarship is open to international students from developing countries who want to study a master’s degree in Belgium. The Academy for Research and Higher Education (ARES) is a public interest organization funded by the Wallonia-Brussels Confederation and created by the “Landscape” decree of 7 November 2013, bringing together 127 higher education institutions. Its role is to ensure the overall coordination of its activities and encourage their cooperation.
Master’s and training course scholarships offer you the opportunity to pursue a one-year professional master’s degree program or a 4 to 6-month advanced training course at a federal higher education institution in Wallonia-Brussels, Belgium.

Scholarship Scope
The ARES Scholarship provides recipients with the following benefits:
Bachelor’s and Master’s Scholarship Amount:
- International travel costs: Travel in economy class on an IATA-approved airline, with a maximum of one round-trip ticket purchased per academic year.
- Living allowance:1150 euros/month for 12 months.
- Indirect task costs:150 euros. This amount is paid in a lump sum upon arrival for each stay of the recipient.
- Arrival allowance, tuition fees and return fees 700 euros. This amount is paid in a lump sum upon arrival for each stay of the recipient.
- Registration fees for DGD recipients are calculated at prevailing rates.
- Insurance costs are paid directly by ARES.
- Travel expenses for inter-university training are reimbursed based on actual expenses incurred, with receipts provided.
Training course subsidy amount:
- International travel expenses; Economy class travel on an IATA-approved airline, one round-trip ticket.
- living allowance; 83 euros/day applies to stays lasting from 8 to 17 days; 1400 euros/month applies to stays lasting from 18 days to 1 month (set amount); 1400 euros/month (stay lasts from 1 to 6 months), prorated by number of days
- Indirect task fee 150 euros. This amount is paid in a lump sum upon arrival for each stay of the recipient.
- Insurance costs are paid directly by ARES.
- Travel expenses during inter-school training will be reimbursed on an actual basis and receipts will be provided.
ARES Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the ARES scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Required language: English, French
- Eligible countries: Nationals of Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia (English training courses only), Haiti, Madagascar, Morocco, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Senegal and Vietnam.
- Become a citizen of a developing country. To be eligible, applicants must be living and working in their country of origin at the time of application.

- Have obtained a diploma equivalent to a postgraduate diploma in Belgian university studies. However, for certain training courses, different requirements may apply.
- have Relevant professional experience in a developing country At least two years after graduate studyor three years after study if the applicant has obtained a graduate degree from a university in an industrialized country.
- Proficient in written and spoken French. For training courses held in another language, appropriate course language (written and spoken) proficiency is required. Applicants must be committed to learning French in order to participate in daily life in Belgium.

How to apply for the ARES Scholarship?
Please follow these important instructions to qualify for the ARES Masters and Internship Scholarships:
- You must first ensure that you have an active GIRAF account.
- You can create an account on the GIRAF platform through this link. The account will be verified by ARES (within hours to days, do not create multiple accounts) and you will receive a confirmation email to create your password.
- If you created a verified account last yearyou can reuse the account and reset your password if necessary.
