Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu, said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s political future “looks bleak”.
Onanuga’s comments come after Abubakar’s coalition efforts challenged all the Progressive Conference (APC) in the 2027 general election.
On Wednesday, April 23, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oberevwori and several prominent politicians from the Democratic People’s Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the APC. It is also speculated that former Delta Governor and PDP Vice Presidential Candidate Ifeanyi Okowa is also expected to join the ruling party. Okowa was personally selected by Abubakar in the last presidential election.
The PDP is currently facing a wave of defections, and more and more party leaders may soon join the APC. Onanuga responded to a Tunde Rahman article on X that Okowa’s defection and the late gradual change of the position of former member of Congress (CPC) undermined the proposed alliance.
“The political future of atiku looks bleak. The alliance of him, El Rufai, Babachir and new member Baba-Ahmed are being pieced together,” Onanuga said. “Potential allies, including former running companion Ifeanyi Okowa and resolved CPC members, are providing extensive berths for his leprosy group. Atiku is once again a loser.”
Abubakar has repeatedly expressed his intention to establish a coalition of opposition parties to challenge the APC in 2027. However, the PDP governor ruled out any possibility of merger or alliance with other political parties.
