    Canada has rejected 13,171 Nigerians asylum in the past decade

    Canada has rejected 13,171 Nigerians asylum in the past decade

    New official data shows that from January 2013 to December 2024, 13,171 Nigerians seeking refugee protection in Canada were denied.

    Data shows that in 2024, the Canadian government rejected 811 Nigerians applying for refugee protection.

    This development comes with official data from the Refugee Protection Department of the Canadian Council on Immigration and Refugees, ranks fifth in the top five countries with the highest claims.

    The others are Mexico, with 2,954 rejections, India (1,688), Haiti (982) and Colombia (723).

    Analysis of rejections since 2013 shows that, according to the new system that determines the refugee protection claims filed by Canada, were denied protection in 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively, and came into effect on December 15, 2012, respectively.

    In addition, in 2016, 2017 and 2018, 476, 917 and 1,777 claims were rejected, respectively.

    In 2019, the largest number of rejected claims, with 3,951 Nigerian applicants rejecting it.

    If the RPD satisfactorily confirms that the applicant or claimant would meet the United Nations definition of refugees in the Convention, the IMRB provides refugee protection in Canada, “has been incorporated into Canadian law, or the applicant is the person who needs protection.

    The official decided whether he was eligible to forward the claim to the IRB.

    The Refugee Commission’s application guidelines read: “If the claim meets the criteria, send it (“referral”) to the RPD to initiate a claim for refugee protection procedures.”

    Nevertheless, 10,580 Nigerians have obtained refugee status in the decade of the review, with at least 2,230 from January 2024 to December 1224.
