Mark Carney won the leadership of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Justin Trudeau as the country’s next prime minister.
Carney, 59, won a decisive victory in 86% of the vote, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in a match that saw nearly 152,000 party members involved. His leadership is in a challenging time in Canada, engaging in a trade dispute with the United States under President Donald Trump and is preparing for the election.
Carney aims at Trump
Carney addressed the party members after the victory and took a strong stance against Trump, accusing him of damaging Canada’s economy.
“Someone is trying to weaken our economyHe said that prompted the crowd to boo. “He is attacking Canadian workers, families and businesses. We can’t let him succeed. ”
Carney stressed that his administration will act decisively to address future economic and political challenges.
“This won’t do business as usual,” he declared. We will have to do things we never thought before, at a speed we think it is impossible. ”
Trudeau’s departure and liberal revival
Trudeau announced in January that he would resign after more than nine years in power, and he acknowledged the importance of the transition.
“There is no doubt that this is a moment that defines the country. Democracy is not given. Freedom is not given. Even Canada is not a given,” Trudeau said.
Newcomer to politics Carney believes his experience as the only leader of two G7 central banks (Canada and the United Kingdom) makes him fully qualified to handle trade talks with Trump.
Carney vowed to maintain pressure on the U.S. government as Trump threatens to seriously affect the Canadian economy.
“My administration will keep tariffs until Americans show us respect,” he said.
The Liberals lagged 20 points or more in early 2025 and have seen a revival of support, and now polls show statistical links to opposition conservatives, led by opposition conservatives Stone. The shift is partly attributed to Trump’s trade policy and his controversial remarks about Canada.
When Carney is ready to take office, elections are imminent
In the general election requested by October 20, Liberal sources said Carney could vote early in the coming weeks.
Although he can serve as prime minister in the House of Commons, tradition shows that he will seek to secure the mission as soon as possible.
At the same time, political struggles are heating up. The liberals tried to compare Poilievre and Trump in the sending, and Poilievre reinforced his attack on Carney after his victory.
