American conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot dead on September 10, 2025 while giving a speech at the University of Utah during the U.S. turning point event. The incident occurred less than 20 minutes in his massive shooting when the gunman opened fire from a roof near the site. Kirk was hit in the neck and died shortly afterwards.
Thousands of attacks
The event was attended by about 3,000 people and quickly fell into chaos. Students and attendees were evacuated because of safety, first responders rushed to the scene. Authorities later confirmed that the shooter used a high-power bolt-type rifle located on a nearby roof.
The suspect is known as Taylor Robinson
On September 12, investigators confirmed that Tyler Robinson, 22, of Utah, had been identified and detained in connection with the shooting. Law enforcement revealed that Robinson acted alone and there was evidence that political opposition to Kirk’s views was part of his motivation.
Forensic and surveillance evidence
Investigators recovered suspicious rifles from the roof and conducted forensic evidence from the roof. Surveillance footage showed the shooter fleeing the scene, helping officials track down and arrest the suspect.
National and political responses
The killings have caused widespread condemnation throughout the political field. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox described the incident as a “tragic attack on free expression” while President Donald Trump labeled it as a “political assassination.”
The FBI and local law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the suspect’s motivations, while supporters of the United States and Kirk mourn the loss of one of the most prominent conservative voices in the United States.
