China’s ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai reaffirmed China’s determination to defend its legitimate interests in the ongoing trade war with the United States. Speaking at a recent press conference in Abuja, Yu, political affairs consultant Zhang Yi and business affairs consultant Wang Yingqi criticized what he described as the growing global segregationist and aggressive economic posture in the United States. He said the app is not a viable solution to tensions.
Ambassador Zhang condemned US President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, saying that the trade war is not only aimed at China, but also a broad rejection of global cooperation. He said the United States is undermining its credibility on the world stage and showing obvious selfishness to the international community. Zhang stressed that due to the country’s lower labor force and high return on investment, a large part of U.S. companies import products from China are made in China by U.S. companies.
Yu stressed that China is transitioning to high-quality development, with technology and domestic consumption as new drivers of economic growth. He criticized the United States’ approach to establishing international relations, calling it arrogance and hegemony, and accused Washington of abandoning diplomacy and favoring economic aggression. According to YU, the United States launched a global tariff war in pursuit of unilateral interests, sacrificed its common global interests and sparked widespread opposition.
Yu stressed China’s domestic strength, whose economy grew 5.4% in the first quarter of this year, and China has been a key factor in global economic growth, accounting for 30% of global growth over the past decade. He believes that in the face of external pressure, the support of 1.4 billion Chinese citizens and the United States’ complete industrial infrastructure is the backbone of resilience.
Yu also pointed out that the strengthening of bilateral relations between China and Nigeria refers to President Bora Tinub’s recent visit to Beijing, which led to an increase in relations with the comprehensive strategic partnership. He revealed that efforts are being made to expand China’s imports of Nigerian goods, especially in the oil sector, as part of expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.
