Chinese businesswomen angry over closure of main market in Onitsha, Anambra State

A Chinese businesswoman has publicly expressed her strong anger and deep dissatisfaction over the long-term closure of the main market in Onitsha, Anambra State. She said the ongoing shutdown has severely disrupted business activities and impacted businesses.

came to a standstill and caused significant financial losses to traders both inside and outside the market.

According to her, thousands of people – from local traders, loaders, transporters, suppliers, artisans to foreign investors – depend on the day-to-day functioning of the market for their survival. She noted that the closure has not only impacted livelihoods, but has also created growing uncertainty and fear among local and international business partners who rely on the Onitsha main market as West Africa’s main commercial hub.

She further warned that prolonged inactivity could damage investor confidence, weaken cross-border trade relations and negatively impact the overall economy of Anambra State. She called on authorities to take urgent action and called for swift, sustainable solutions that would allow markets to safely reopen and resume normal business activity.
