- Veteran comedian Atunyota Akpobome aka Ali Baba discusses polygamy.
- He believed that responsible polygamy could bring peace and stability to the family.
- Alibaba contrasts this view with the common belief that polygamy causes chaos.

Veteran comedian Atunyota Akpobome, better known as Ali Baba, has weighed in on the long-debated issue of polygamy.
In an interview with media personality Nedu, the stand-up comedy icon said that polygamy, if practiced responsibly, can actually promote peace and stability in the family rather than causing chaos.
Alibaba explains that some men end up becoming unfaithful because of the restrictions of monogamy, and believes that polygamy offers a structured alternative. He said:
“Some people feel that if you only have one wife, you may not be able to control your wife. But if the wife knows you have more than one wife, she will calm down because she knows that if she misbehaves, there is another person she can take advantage of.”
The comedian stressed that in his opinion polygamy, if done correctly, can stop men from cheating and reduce tensions between spouses.
Alibaba draws on history to reveal that polygamy was not only accepted in traditional societies, but was often encouraged by women themselves.
He narrated a true story in Ibadan of a woman who once advised her husband to take another wife instead of having a concubine outside of marriage. He said:
“I actually knew a woman in Ibadan who encouraged her husband to practice polygamy. Most of them at that time would even marry a young girl and give her to their husbands because they didn’t want their husbands to have concubines.”
The comedy legend added that in traditional African culture, polygamy was not just about pleasure or status. He explained that widows, especially those with young children, were often married by their deceased husband’s brothers to ensure financial and emotional support for the family.
Alibaba noted:
“Critics often forget that many men today have children out of wedlock. So instead of pretending, the traditional system makes it structured and accountable.”

@Tender_Lights: “There is nothing wrong with polygamy… in fact it should be encouraged”
@IniReakboy: “Omo, there is no reason, he just happened, either he likes women or something else, one is enough, no reason.”
@Pentroi2: “Since this topic keeps coming up, I made sure I wasn’t quick to comment. However, people’s understanding of marriage varies. Some people grew up in polygamous households and some didn’t. This factor reflects people’s reality and perception of marriage. So, there’s no need for a 4 debate.”
@ataxerxes0: “Just like that, people will take this outrage bait and run with it! People need to know that all these bloggers are just looking for parts to piss people off and then post in other parts to get views.”
