
The Borno State Police Command arrested a couple after a disturbing video circulating showing physical abuse of minors in the Pompeii area of Madouguri.
Mr. Shettima entered his compound to pick some mangoes from the trees and after she toured the minor on Friday, March 21, she whipped the video of the minor. The video was condemned by many calls for the arrest of the couple.
Command spokesman ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed their arrest in a statement.
“On March 19, 2025, an 11-year-old girl, Hauwa Mohammed Goni, a primary school 5, a federal low-cost elementary school student, entered the residence of a Mr. Mohammed Shetima 33yrs in Pompomari.
In response, Mr. Shetima and his wife, Mrs. Aishatu Abubakar, 23, matched the child and suffered severe whipping. During the attack, Mrs. Aishatu Abubakar recorded the incident and shared the video on social media.
The petition filed by civil society organizations concerned, including potential lawyers, promptly raised an alarm, leading to the arrest of the couple. They were arrested with the assistance of relevant citizens and agents from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Borno State Command. ”
Dassault said the victim has since been taken to the Maiduguri University Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for medical care and she is responding to treatment.
He added that the suspect is currently in the gender department of the state Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Maiduguri, because the investigation is underway before the prosecution.
ASP DASO further stated that the command assured the public that it would conduct a thorough investigation of the case and would prosecute the suspects under relevant parts of the Child Protection Act and the Borno State Criminal Law Act.
He added: “For accountability and transparency, the order will continue to provide updates on the progress of the case.”
