Kaduna District Court sentenced Salisu Abubakar, 33, to eight months in prison for stealing packaging paper worth N830,000.
However, District Judge Ibrahim Emmanuel awarded the criminal, a resident of Liberia Road in Malali, Kaduna, and the option of N50,000 fine.
The magistrate warned the offender not to commit a crime and ordered the stolen wrapper to be returned to the owner.
Earlier, the criminal pleaded guilty to his charges.
After pleading guilty, Prosecutor Chidi Leo urged the court to immediately trial him under Article 286, Article 2 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Prosecutors told the court that Mr Abubakar committed a crime on April 18 at Ungwan Rimi Road, Kaduna.
Mr Leo said Mr Abu Bakar and two other people now broke into a shop belonging to the complainant, Rabiu Nasir, and stole the wrapping paper and lace fabric worth N830,000.
He said Mr. Abubakar was captured by stolen items while others fled.
