Curacao became one of the unexpected newcomers in the CONCACAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The country of 185,489 people tops Group B with 12 points and will be in the spotlight around the world as it competes in the FIFA Men’s World Cup for the first time next year.
Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda failed to qualify, while Jamaica still has a chance to secure the final spot in the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, via the international play-offs.
When will Curacao join FIFA?
Although Curaçao Federation was founded in 1921, it did not join FIFA until 1932 and its first international tournament ended in third place behind Costa Rica and El Salvador. In 1946, the country hosted an official tournament to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the federation; Aruba, Suriname, Colombia and Feyenoord participated, with the host nation lifting the trophy. Its golden age came in the 1950s, when Curaçao became one of the strongest teams in the region – winning gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games – but political problems and internal problems at the time prevented it from reaching the World Cup.
The team’s best results include two third-place finishes in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1963 and 1969. Qualifying for the 2026 World Cup now ranks as one of the federation’s greatest achievements.
