Dalhousie University Scholarships 2023-2024 are fully funded scholarships for international students. This scholarship is available for master’s and doctoral studies. The scholarship is worth $30,000 and covers a monthly stipend, room and board, fee waivers and health insurance.
The unified scholarship process allows current/prospective students to use a single application to be considered for multiple FGS-administered scholarships, including
- Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarships,
- Killam Predoctoral Fellowship,
- Eliza Rich PhD Entrance Scholarship for Women,
- James Robinson Johnston African Canadian Graduate Entrance Scholarship,
- Vitamin Scholarship
- Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarship.
Applicants please consult the internal deadlines for the course you wish to study, which are usually early December. All required application materials should be submitted to your program of study by this internal deadline. Late submission may result in your application being ineligible for review.

Scholarship Scope
Dalhousie University scholarships are available in the following types:
Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarships
- Master’s level awards are valued at $10,000 per year for 2 years (renewable annually).
- The value of the PhD-level award is US$15,000 per year for 4 years (subject to annual renewal).
Killam Predoctoral Fellowship
- Master (Level 1): $6666.66 per semester + ITF (International Students) + Relocation Allowance (if applicable)
- PhD (Level 2): $10,000 per semester + relocation allowance (if applicable) + two-year Presidential Award. Please note that international tuition fees are no longer charged for Dalhousie doctoral programs.
Eliza Rich PhD Entrance Scholarship for Women
- The award is valued at $30,000 for the 12-month academic year.
- Candidates holding other scholarships of any type (including internal and external scholarships to Dalhousie University) will receive the Eliza Rich Women’s Doctoral Entrance Scholarship as a “supplemental award” to their other scholarships in a total amount not to exceed $30,000 per academic year and not to exceed $10,000 per semester.
James Robinson Johnston African Canadian Graduate Entrance Scholarship
- The Master’s Scholarship is worth US$15,000 for twelve months of full-time study. The award is renewable, subject to annual progress review (scholarship-level eligibility required). The award is valid for up to 24 months of full-time study.
- The 12-month PhD scholarship is worth $19,000. The award is renewable, subject to annual progress review (scholarship-level eligibility required). The award is valid for up to 36 months of full-time study.
- Fees are not waived and must be paid from the award.
- A new award is awarded each year.
- Candidates holding any other scholarship (including Dalhousie University internal and external scholarships) will receive the African-Canadian James Robinson Johnston Graduate Entrance Scholarship as a “supplemental award” to their other scholarships, with a total amount not to exceed $20,000 per academic year for the Master’s degree and $30,000 per academic year for the Doctoral degree.
Vitamin Scholarship
- Awards are valued at $19,000 (Master’s) and $21,000 (PhD) for the 12-month academic year (one to two awards per year)
Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarship
- The scholarship is valued at US$40,000 and is valid for one 12-month academic year of full-time study. This scholarship is renewable, subject to annual progress review.
- The award is valid for up to 24 months of full-time study.
- Fees are not waived and must be paid from the award.
- A new award is awarded each year.
Eligibility Criteria for Dalhousie University Scholarships
To be eligible for a Dalhousie University scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Required language: English.
- Eligible countries: All countries in the world
For applications to the Masters Competition:
- Please review the CGS-M evaluation criteria, which form the basis for ranking of applications.
- Write in clear, plain language and avoid jargon.
- Consider reviewing the “Proposed Research Outline (Attachment)” section of the CGS-M instructions for advice on what to include in a strong research proposal.
For applications to the PhD competition:
- Please review the selection criteria for the Coordinated CGS PhD Program.
- Consider reviewing the Vanier PhD Competition Research Proposal Description or the Tri-Institutional PhD Competition Description for advice on what to include in a strong research proposal.
How to apply for Dalhousie University scholarships?
Please follow the steps below to apply for Dalhousie University scholarships.
(1) Log in to the FGS scholarship management platform. If you already have a Dalhousie NetID, please selectUsing Dalhousie NetID” to log in. If you don’t have one, enter your email address and create a password. You only need to create one account, even if you plan to apply for multiple opportunities.
(2) Create a new scholarship application or edit an existing scholarship application frommy application” listed on your home page. Only one application per applicant per match will be accepted, so please do not submit multiple Unified Scholarship applications.
(3) Master’s degree applicants who have applied to the tri-institutional CGS-M competition may choose to use their CGS-M application in the unified scholarship process. To do this, select “Master’s Level – CGS-M Opt In” as a submission category and proceed with your application. The Graduate School will link your CGS-M application to your opt-in form, including letters of recommendation and transcript submission for the three-institution CGSM competition. The opt-in deadline is December 1Yingshi (Consistent with the CGS-M application deadline set by Tri-Agency). If you do not choose to join the CGS-M application, you must complete the Consolidated Scholarship Application to be considered for other awards.
(4) All applicants are encouraged to complete the self-identification questionnaire in the online scholarship platform. This enables administrators to ensure that applicants are classified into the review process for award opportunities with specific eligibility criteria. The information provided in this questionnaire is not visible to reviewers and will be kept strictly confidential.
(5) click”nexThe “t” at the bottom of each page can be moved within the app. Click “save” will allow applicants to close the application and return later to edit or update.
(6) Applicants must obtain and upload official transcripts directly in the scholarship portal by following the instructions in the application. FGS will not provide copies of transcripts with applications for admission. Transcripts from multiple institutions must be combined into a single PDF before uploading. Unofficial transcripts from current Dalhousie students may be used in lieu of official transcripts for the Unified Scholarship process.
(7) All letters of recommendation must be submitted on the portal by the deadline of January 16, 2023 (February 15 for non-thesis applicants). After this date, the application portal will be closed to applicants and recommenders, and incomplete applications will not be forwarded for review. Recommendations will not be accepted in email or hard copy form. Applicants are strongly encouraged to inform recommenders of the deadline by January 14 in case of unforeseen emergencies or technical issues. Applicants will receive email notifications from the portal and a “Received” symbol will appear in red next to each recommender’s name as their references are completed. Please check the status of your references frequently before the deadline.
(8) Agree to the terms and conditions and click “Save and complete” to complete and submit your application.
notes: You have until the January 15 deadline to withdraw your application to make changes, including updating your transcript with fall grades or making edits based on feedback received by your department. If you withdraw your application, must Resubmit before January 15thth Deadline for consideration.
