U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not rule out seeking a third term in the White House.
He said on Sunday that “I’m not kidding” attempting to appoint a third term, which was prohibited by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
“A lot of people want me to do that,” Trump said during a call to NBC News on Sunday. “But, I mean, I basically told them we still have a long way to go, very early in the administration.”
“I’m focused on the present,” Trump added in his most extensive comments to date on his third term.
When asked if he wanted another term, the president replied: “I love working.”
When asked for clarification, Trump said: “I’m not kidding.” “But I’m not–it’s too early to consider it.”
Asked if plans have been enacted that allow him to pursue a third term, Trump said: “There are some ways to do it.”
NBC News asked Vice President JD Vance about his campaign for office and then passed the role to Trump. Trump replied, “That’s a” approach.
“But there are others,” Trump added.
When asked to share another approach, Trump simply answered “no.”
It would be very difficult to amend the Constitution to repeal two restrictions, requiring two-thirds of Congress or two-thirds of states to agree to convene a constitutional convention to propose changes. Then, either route requires approval from three quarters of the states.
The president pointed out his poll data, saying “many people want me” to serve in the third term.
Trump has previously commented on comments in his third term in office, although Republicans see these comments as jokes or the president criticizing his critics.
