In other news…… Lagos National Building Control Agency (LASBCA) ordered the demolition of Somoru’s Redemption Christian Church (RCCG) parish because a neighboring building under construction collapsed, which seriously damaged the structure of the church.
The incident took place during a church service on Monday. Despite the widespread structural damage caused by the collapse, no injuries or deaths were reported.
By Tuesday, Rasbia officials had issued a final evacuation notice to the church and declared it structurally unsafe. Please read the notice issued on site: “The building was declared troubled and must be deleted within 7 days.”
Residents in the area expressed concern about the speed of construction of collapsed buildings, saying the project was unusually hasty.
“After the removal of the old structure, the new structure has risen in a few days,” Daniel Ojo, chief pastor of the affected RCCG parish. “Now, we don’t have church construction.”
Pastor Ojo points out the emotional damage caused to the church community by the situation.
“Turn away far away and potentially disperse our members. We are not just churches, we are a family.” He said.
Witnesses said the workers were on the top floor of the building when they collapsed.
“They jumped up. It was a miracle and no one was killed.” Shared by local vendors.
LASBCA spokesman Adekomi Adeniyi confirmed that structural assessments have been conducted and that demolition is necessary to avoid further risks to life and property.
Urban planning professionals raise new concerns about the shocking trend of unregulated construction projects in Lagos, citing the Somoru incident as another example of system issues within the city’s construction department.
As of press time, no official sanctions or enforcement measures have been announced for developers of collapsed structures.
