Fear gripped residents of Bagudo, Kebbi State, after a powerful explosion rocked the General Hospital early Tuesday morning. Although the explosion caused severe structural damage, the Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that there were no casualties.
The explosion occurred in the early morning of December 30 and immediately triggered a joint operation by police, soldiers and security personnel.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman confirmed that a building inside the hospital staff quarters was damaged but timely evacuation averted the tragedy.
“Although a building in the hospital staff dormitory was damaged, all personnel had evacuated before the explosion and no casualties were caused.”
Experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) team have been deployed to the scene to determine the nature and source of the explosion. SP Usman assured the community that the situation is currently under control.
The police chief urged the public to avoid the area while investigators work.
“Agents quickly secured the area to prevent any further danger… [We] The public is urged to remain calm and stay away from the area around the hospital. “
The incident remains under scrutiny as authorities work to determine whether the explosion was accidental or an act of sabotage.
