Afrobeat star Iyanya has shared how fame has affected his love life, revealing that past heartbreak and the pressure of being in the spotlight make it difficult for him to be emotionally involved.
The 39-year-old singer opened up about how a difficult experience with his ex-partner shaped his current views on love and commitment during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast.
Iyania explained that some of his previous relationships ended poorly, with ex-partners allegedly threatening to damage his reputation by sharing personal disputes on gossip platforms.
He added that these experiences, coupled with the constant public attention that comes with being a celebrity, left him with emotional scars and made him hesitant to pursue serious relationships.
“I didn’t consider a serious relationship or marriage because I wasn’t mentally ready,” he said. “If you’re patient and hold on until I get to a convenient place, then we can do it.”
He said his priority right now is personal growth and recovery, noting that accepting commitments has become particularly difficult for him.
“For me, making a commitment is one of the hardest things to do right now,” he added. “As a celebrity, I’ve done it several times, and every time, I’ve been hurt.”
The singer also noted that fame often complicates relationships, as misunderstandings can quickly be amplified on social media.
“When you’re famous, your girlfriend can’t wait to visit the blog when you have a misunderstanding,” he said. “I am also a human being. I have been in the music industry for 17 years. I cannot just play games with women. I have also truly loved each other.”
