
The federal government predicts heavy rain and flooding in 30 states and the Federal Capital Region (FCT) this year.
Water Resources and Health Minister Joseph Utsev disclosed this during the public introduction of the 2025 annual flood prospects for Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in Abuja on Thursday, April 10.

Utsev said some parts of the country’s south-south geopolitical zone will experience coastal and river flooding due to sea levels rise. Among these states are Bielsa, Cross River, Delta and River, while Akwa-bibom and Edo are in high permeability risk states.
The minister revealed that floods remain one of Nigeria’s most destructive natural disasters, with climate change accelerating its frequency and severity.
He revealed that 1,249 communities (LGAs) in 176 local government areas (LGAs) in 30 states this year are high-risk flood areas, while 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs are at moderate flood risk. Key risk areas include Abia, Benue, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers and Jigawa.
