The federal government has established a special committee to prevent ship accidents from happening in order to resolve frequent ship accidents on Nigerian waterways.
Minister of Ocean and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola spoke at the committee’s inauguration ceremony in Abuja.
“The mission ahead is challenging, but through commitment we can eliminate ships without incident and ensure our waterways remain safe and navigable for future generations,” Oyetola said.
The committee is chaired by Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterway Administration (NIWA), which includes representatives from the state government, the Association of Ship Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts and scholars.
The committee was asked to conduct a comprehensive review of commercial ship operations, identify the root causes of ship accidents, and recommend sustainable solutions to improve safety.
Oyebamiji assured the minister that the committee will work to improve safety and operational standards.
The committee has six weeks to complete its findings, submit a detailed report and propose long-term solutions.
