
During the routine maintenance operations performed at the Gubi Dam water treatment plant in Bauchizhou, four workers were conducting regular maintenance operations.
The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2025, when workers were performing sludge cleaning activities in the factory tunnel.
CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, spokesman for the Bauchi State Police Department, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying workers had entered the clarifier to remove the pit tube but were tragically overcome and fell into a coma.
“About 1700 hours today, a tragic incident occurred at the Guby Dam water treatment plant, resulting in the unfortunate loss of four dedicated personnel during a sludge cleaning operation in the tunnels of the plant,” the statement said.
“This incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen workplace safety practices and strictly adhere to established protocols.

“They all live in the Firo Village of Ganjuwa LGA in Butch State. Their commitment to work at the Gubi Dam water treatment plant has left an indelible mark on colleagues and the wider community.
“The sludge cleaning operation started about 1200 hours. During the operation, the staff entered the clarification machine to remove the pit tube, but was tragically overcome and unconscious. Despite immediate medical intervention, it was pronounced dead at the Bauchi Specialty Hospital.
“After receiving information about this incident, the police quickly deployed the personnel. The body was recovered under the standard protocol and an investigation was underway to determine the details surrounding the incident. The management of the water treatment plant worked completely with the relevant agencies to facilitate a comprehensive and transparent review.
“The key to this incident reminds the importance of safety in the water treatment sector. It highlights the responsibility of employers and employees, highlights and complies with established safety protocols to mitigate future risks.
Under the leadership of CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu PSC (+) MNI, the Bauchi State Police Command expressed heartfelt condolences to the management of the Gubi Dam water treatment plant and the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
