According to the interim results, Gabon’s military leader Brice Oligui Nguema won the country’s presidential election, which was clearly a landslide.
The Home Ministry said on Sunday, April 13 that Nguema, who led the 2023 military coup, received about 90% of the vote.
Based on the initial results, his main rival, Alain Claude Bilie-by-nze, won about 3% of the vote.
Nguema played a major role in ending the 55-year dynasty rule of the Bongo family, and he is widely expected to win the eight candidates.
On Election Day, Bilie-by-Nze warned of “potential” problems during the counting period, but Nguema said the election process was “transparent.”
After winning, Nguema spoke exclusively with Al Jazeera in his first international news interview and promised to “restore the dignity of the Gabones people.”
Nguema told Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem: “I will give back to everything they gave me today. I want to go back to them.”
