Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa died not due to gas leaks in their home

New Mexico authorities have revealed that the death of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were not due to gas leaks.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the New Mexico gas company confirmed “no major findings” in a broad investigation into gas leaks and carbon monoxide at the couple’s home.

The company said it found a “minor leak” in one of one of the furnace burners and four violations of the heater and fireplace lighter and violated four code enforcement during the February 26 investigation.

“These results are not a factor in the death of Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa, or their dog,” the sheriff’s office noted.

The office said the information has been passed to the medical investigator’s office.

Hackman and Arakawa were found dead at their home in New Mexico along with their dogs, after officials were earlier considered “suspicious enough” to ensure a thorough investigation.

The cause of death of Hackman, 95-year-old Hackman and Betsy Arakawa is unknown.

According to preliminary autopsy and officials, the two showed no external trauma and showed no signs of immediate foul. There were also no immediate signs of carbon monoxide or natural gas leaks, authorities said.

Santafe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said Hackman and his wife tested carbon monoxide negatively and could rule it out as potential causes of death.
