Nigerian singer Spyro has recently sparked debates that gospel artists are engaged in making money, just like Afrobeats stars.
He said, on the popular HIPTV show. “Those who claim to be evangelical artists or evangelical preachers are just artists – they are doing business that makes money like we are in the African-American industry”.
Fans react with mixed opinions. @MusicLover23 tweeted: “In the end, someone said! Gospel artists work hard and should be paid like any other musician. It’s a business, not just a ministry.”
Another user @naijabeatsfan added: “Spyro is right. Making gospel music involves cost and energy. Why do gospel artists do this at Afrobeats Stars?”
Meanwhile, @faithfirst commented: “Gothic music is about spreading God’s word, not chasing money. This mentality may undermine the purity of the gospel.”
Similarly, @spiritualvoice writes: “I respect Spyro, but gospel artists should prioritize ministry over money. The focus should be on the soul rather than sales”.
Spyro also praised female artists like Tems, who, despite the industry pressures that kept the decent pressure, said: “There are a lot of pressure on female artists to do crazy things. Tems is sticking with it, but she is now one of the world’s largest female artists. She is decent. She is together.
