    Gov Mutfwang issues executive order to suspend mining on plateau

    Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang has issued an executive order that suspends all mining activities throughout the state and takes effect immediately.

    “There has been an increase in illegal mining activities and insecurity related to such mining activities in various local government areas of the Plateau State.

    “Despite the increase in foreign inflows in mining areas of the Plateau State, the state’s insecurity has increased significantly, including but not limited to rape, gangsters, illegal possession of guns, drugs and crimes of kidnapping, including but not limited to rape, gangsters, illegal possession of firearms, drugs and kidnapping,” the governor added.

    Mutfwang further pointed out that the state government will work closely with the federal government to clarify the role and responsibilities of relevant authorities in regulating mining.

    He stressed the need to establish appropriate standards and surveillance frameworks involving state, local governments, host communities and mineral rights holders.

    In addition, the Governor announced plans for a comprehensive security review of all mining sites to ensure sustainable socio-economic contributions through mining companies, thus ensuring that the host community benefits from mineral resource exploitation.

    The executive order will officially come into effect on February 21, 2025.
