Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde condemned President Bola Tinubu for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Makinde published his two-week news “Governance Business (Issue 110)” on Thursday night, March 20.
Recall that on Tuesday, March 18, President Tinob declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Similayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi ODU and the State Capitol for six months. He then appointed Deputy Admiral IBOK IBAS (RTD.) as the sole administrator.
Governor OYO responded, describing the move as unconstitutional and calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to oppose the action.
Makinde stressed the need to uphold democratic principles, regardless of personal opinion or political affiliation, urging Nigerians to resist any action threatening democratic growth in the country.
“I said today that the announcement of the state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of executive and legislative weapons of the presidential government is an illegal act that there are correct members of society that must object.
“No matter our personal feelings and loyalty, our democratic purpose must not be bound. It is time to stand on fairness, equity and justice.
“As our democracy develops and develops, we must be willing to object to anything that jeopardizes our progress. We must choose to stand up, even if it means being alone,” Makinde said.
The governor also praised his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), for taking a firm stance on the matter.
He revealed that the PDP Governors Forum was unanimously determined to challenge the president’s decision in court during an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
He added: “We can’t fold our hands and watch us build democracy for nearly thirty years.”
