Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum ordered an immediate prosecution of Bukar Modu, a person shown in an unsettling viral video allegedly attacked minor Bashir Gaji.
The suspect Bukar Modu is said to be a Quran teacher who was arrested by security agents on Saturday night, April 12, 2025 in Umarari, Maiduguri.
Zulum met Bashir Gaji at the government building in Maiduguri on Sunday and issued a prosecution order on Sunday.
The video has sparked anger from social media platforms, highlighting a serious violation of children’s rights.
Governor Zulum stressed that his administration would not tolerate any form of abuse or exploitation of minors and directed swift action to bring perpetrators to justice.
“This outrageous behavior is an offense to our values and a betrayal of our responsibility to protect our custody children, students and minors,” Zurum Governor Zurum said. “We cannot repeat our actions permanently. I direct the authorities to act quickly and ensure that person is facing the full scope of the law. Our children should have a safe environment to grow and become meaningful members of society.”
However, the Governor directed the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Development to design a way to educate families and local traditional teachers and guardians to properly enforce discipline for children.
Meanwhile, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum met with Little Bashir Gaji at the Government Building on Sunday. He announced that he would provide Bukar and his family with a fully equipped home and provide scholarships to pay for his education.
Little Gaji’s family currently lives in IDP camps in Monguno, where his father was assassinated by Boko Haram rebels.
