    Grammy Awards announces Lifetime Achievement Award Fela Kuti breaks new ground

    • Late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will receive a Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.
    • He is the first African musician to receive this honor.
    • The recognition event will also honor other music icons, including Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Cher and Chaka Khan.

    Late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will be posthumously awarded the Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award at the 67th Grammy Awards, becoming the first African musician to receive this honour.

    The Nigerian legend will be honored alongside other international music greats such as Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Cher and Chaka Khan.

    In an official statement, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr described the winners as “A remarkable group whose influence spanned generations, genres and laid the foundations of modern music”.

    The Recording Academy recognized Fela as an “architect of Afrobeats,” emphasizing his transformative impact on the genre and lasting influence on generations of artists.

    The Academy had previously inducted Fela’s 1976 album “Zombie” into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame.
