‘He didn’t read it’ – Rufai Oseni slams Tinubu for signing electoral bill in less than 24 hours

    • Rufai Oseni has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his speed in signing the electoral law amendment into law soon after it was passed by the National Assembly, arguing that the speed indicated that the president may not have properly vetted the bill.
    • The swift approval sparked public debate, with critics arguing that such important legislation needs to be carefully scrutinized before becoming law.

Arise TV news anchor Rufai Oseni has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his speedy signing of the controversial amendments to the Electoral Act.

Speaking on “The Morning Show” on Tuesday, El-Rufai questioned how the president could properly review the document before approving it. He said the speed with which the bill was signed suggested that due diligence may not have been done.

The president approved the bill less than 24 hours after the National Assembly passed the Electoral Laws 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2026. The swift approval sparked public debate, with critics arguing that such important legislation needs to be carefully scrutinized before becoming law.

El-Rufai stressed that electoral laws are crucial to the credibility of democracy and should not be treated as routine documents.

Rufei said, “This is an aberration of democracy. The president signed a bill in less than 24 hours. Did he go through the attorney general? What bill did he even sign? Who reviewed the bill.”

“Did the president read the bill that he signed, or did he just rush it through? Did they go through the legal process? What did they coordinate? As we speak today, what is even included in the bill?

“In this country, there is a discrepancy between what we signed and what was published. To this day, the same rubber-stamp National Assembly cannot interpret the tax bill.

“The National Assembly is not serious. Those legislators who sang to President Tinubu, ‘With your mandate, we will persevere’.”

“I’m sorry, but we have a dead opposition in this country. If we had a thriving opposition, by this morning they would be the ones running around filing lawsuits.

“I think this opposition should even learn from the APC opposition because in my opinion they are not ready and not organized.”
