Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) (commonly known as Shia) clashed with security agents during a parade in Abuja on Friday, March 28.
IMN members clashed during the Quds parade on Friday at the Banex roundabout in Wuse 2.
Every Friday of Ramadan, Shiites have maintained a war with the Palestinian Quds team around the world for decades. They also protested Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.
This year’s demonstration took place at the Banex junction of Wuse 2, and protesters were seen waving the Palestinian flag and shouting slogans such as “Palestine Freedom”.
Tensions escalated as some protesters began to throw rocks at security agents, according to reports. In response, security personnel fired guns to disperse the crowd.
The exact number of casualties is not yet known.
Videos circulating on social media show protesters marching in Wuse 2 before security agents move to disperse the crowd.
However, the statement by IMN spokesman Sidi Munir Sokoto described the security response as “abuse of power.”
He claimed that up to five protesters could be K!
“This is another tragic incident in which security forces abuse their power by targeting innocent civilians who only exercise their rights to peaceful parliament,” the statement said.
“At the time of writing, we cannot confirm the exact number of people killed, injured and arrested, but from the information we reliably get from witnesses, the figures of the killed are about 5 or so. However, we will update the public in the appropriate courses.
“We call on relevant authorities to investigate this incident and ensure that civil rights are protected. The freedom of the Peaceful Parliament is an inviolable constitutional right and must not be violated.”
