Nigeria’s Afrobeats star Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu (commonly known as Burna Boy) opened up how he proposed his famous stage name.
The Grammy-winning musician said while chatting with tennis legend Roger Federer that the name comes from his childhood obsession with comics and superheroes. Burna Boy recalls spending time creating his own characters and drawing them, which eventually led to the definition of his name today.
He explained that his love for superheroes made him portray himself as a force to be kidnapped. “I used to draw superheroes as a kid. I used to do comics paintings. That’s how I got the name of the Bernard Boy because I wanted to be a character in the comic book,” He said.
Burna Boy also talked about the impact of Afrobeat Icon Fela Kuti on his career, sharing his grandfather introduced him to all of Fela’s albums, which greatly influenced his musical journey.
