- ⚠️Boxing Safety Under Review: Lessons Learned by Segun Olanrewaju
The boxing community is mourning the loss of Segun “Success” Olanrewaju, a former national and West African lightweight champion who collapsed and died in a battle in Accra, Ghana.
Olanrewaju was supposed to have a fight on Friday, but the game was cancelled because he was overweight.
He had no money to return home and pay off his debts 💰, and he accepted another fight on Saturday, but this time without approval from the Nigerian Boxing Commission (NBBOFC).
Sadly, this decision killed him. 💔
🥊 How Battles Become a Deadly
Olanrewaju’s battle was held at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Game 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League.
He fought with Jon Mbanugu, also known as “Jon Power”, and he won 12 victories, one loss and a draw.
Even if he wasn’t ready, Olanrewaju kept leading the points before a tragic turn.
⚡ Everything changed at that moment
In the eighth round, Olanrewaju threw two weak punches before Mbanugu hit him with a strong right hand.
He staggered backwards, leaned against the rope, and fell down.
The referee started counting, but he didn’t stand up.
His team rushed in, removed his gum shield and tried to help him 🆘.
The doctor quickly took him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
💰 Why did he fight
- ❌His first battle was cancelled
According to NBBOFC Secretary General Remi Aboderin:
> “Segun received approval for the Friday fight, but when they checked their weight, he was overweight and therefore cancelled the fight. The next day, he had another fight without our permission. It was a mistake from the Ghana Boxing Association.”
- 💸He needs money to survive
He was already back in Lagos on Saturday morning when Olanrewaju and his team changed their minds.
He told the coach that he had no money to go home 🚗💨.
He also mentioned that he owes Nigeria people and needs to pay.
The organizers of the competition offered him $500 and now he is ready to accept it.
So he returned to Ghana – the last time he entered the ring.

⚠️ He was warned, but he didn’t listen
Olanrewaju’s coach Babatunde Ojo warned him not to fight:
> “I told him, ‘You’re not ready. Don’t fight. Wait for a better chance.’ But he refused to listen.”
Olanrewaju knew his coach wouldn’t allow it, so he didn’t tell him until it was too late.
