Nollywood actor and film producer Kunle Afod has captured the attention of Nigerians after he posted a video showing veteran singer Innocent Onyebuchi, popularly known as Fresh Daddy, battling a long-term illness in hospital.
Aford shared the video on his Facebook page on Wednesday, showing the ailing star lying in a hospital bed. His caption read: “Fresh Daddy Can’t Die – Bad situation for one of Nigeria’s finest artistes.”
When the singer walked in, wearing a blue sleeveless top, it was difficult to recognize Aford at first. “Oba,” Papa Fresh said weakly. “I’m Aford, Kunle Aford,” the actor replied.
Fresh dad asked in surprise: “Lie, how did you know I was here? You are the last person I expected. I wonder if I am hallucinating again. I have looked for you many times before, but I don’t know how to find you. Aford, Abina, are you sent by God?”
Explaining his condition, Fresh Dad said he had been bedridden for two and a half years and the disease had drained him of all his money.
“I started hallucinating, seeing people, those I knew and those I didn’t know. I spoke to them directly, but no one else could see them. This man was doing too much.
“There’s something wrong with my kidneys, my liver, my neuropathy. My eyes, two of them, and if I don’t do this surgery, they’ll never see them again. I’ll never see you again.”
“Now, I need a blood transfusion. I need to buy some pints of blood. They said they need a pint of blood immediately, like two or three packs, because my blood level is very low, only 25%.
“If I stand here right now, unless someone holds me, I’m going to fall. Look at my face, my knees, hurt from the fall, like a child learning to walk,” he added, revealing the severity of his health challenges.
The veteran musician also revealed he could be at risk of being evicted from his apartment, saying he has been struggling to raise rent despite being bedridden.
“Ma’am? gram madam? They don’t waka their waka o. I stayed at home for a few days because of the rent. I had to move to a place I don’t know. They didn’t give me a resignation notice. Shebi na who can know where he can go and sell one or two things to pay for it but I don’t have sabi to do it but I want to keep an eye on the sales even for my TV,” he said.
Fresh Dad further expresses his belief that his illness is not ordinary, suggesting an unseen opponent. “They were just trying to kill themselves, not me. The enemy was waiting to hear how far I could go. While I wasn’t shouting out to the public, they were confused and wondering if what they were doing wasn’t working.”
Despite the ordeal, he said Aford’s unexpected visit brought hope: “For me, meeting someone like you that I don’t want to see is just not going to happen.”
After giving the musician some money, Aford promised to return in a few days and made a public appeal for support.
“This is Fresh Dad. If you know him, you know what I’m talking about. Very handsome. Lovely voice. The man is a great musical artist. He has been sick for over three years. I just heard about it and I decided to go see him in the hospital.
“He said a lot and he suspected the disease might have broken out from different types of people and places, but I just prayed for a speedy recovery. This is not someone we need to forget.”
“I’m here to solicit and beg from the whole world, beg the whole Nigeria, beg the whole entertainment industry. Fresh Daddy is not a name that we can say we don’t remember in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
“We need your support. Nigerians, we need your support. Artistes, the music industry, I’m calling you out. Please. Let’s let him live. I met him in a very, very bad situation,” he said.
Vanguard reported in February 2024 that Daddy Fresh had been paralyzed for nearly 30 months due to a partial stroke.
“Whenever I get an unexpected call or message on my phone, I feel relieved because I know someone remembers me and wishes me well.
“Just ‘Hi, how are you?’ goes a long way to easing the effects of the deep and severe pain. I pray and trust God that this phase will come and go… and that I will recover better.” he told Vanguard at the time.
