Ibas, the only administrator of the river, said the country remained vulnerable despite its relative calm

The sole executive of Rivers State, Ibok-Ibeth Ibas (RTD), Deputy Admiral stressed the fragile peace in the state, stressing that despite the calm, careful management still needs to be carried out in the ongoing political transition.

Speaking at a meeting with the Oversight Committee of the House Interim Committee on Friday, April 25, the IBA acknowledged the committee’s important role in maintaining democratic integrity and guaranteed all his cooperation in his work.

Ibas regretted the disappearance of the early meeting with the Commission, explaining that the absence was not intentional due to the urgent need to stabilize in the governance of the country in the declared emergency. He further clarified that the delay in his participation in the meeting was not a disregard for the committee, but a result of the pressing challenges of his role.

Although the state has restored some order, Ibas warned that the River State is still in a vulnerable state. He asked for additional time to properly prepare a comprehensive report on the affairs of the state, emphasizing the need for careful and thorough handling of all matters related to the transition. He assured the Commission that all necessary information would be provided to assist in their oversight.

Professor Julius Ihonvbere, Chairman of the Interim Committee for Oversight of the House of Representatives, emphasized the constitutional significance of the National Assembly in overseeing river emergency. He noted that while the president has the right to declare a state of emergency, the ratification of the National Assembly is crucial to legitimacy. Ihonvbere also reminded IBAS that the National Assembly must approve all functions of the state legislature (including budget approval) during this period.

Despite the delays in the initial delay, the Commission welcomed the final appearance of Ibas and affirmed the importance of their supervision in stabilizing the country. A new date will be announced, with further updates to the House spokesperson.
